Pedestrian Improvement Project:
Alongside regular street resurfacing, the City of Oxford is partnering with Miami University to orchestrate a Pedestrian Safety Project along High Street between Patterson and Campus Avenue in Summer 2021. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is a major partner on this project, contributing $1M in funding. Check out the map below to view the location of the project. The project’s highest priority will be to add traffic calming, safety enhancements for pedestrians. This includes installing medians with low-height landscaping and improving the alignment of crosswalks. These new crosswalks will be enhanced with rapid flashing beacons. The medians will slow traffic and the new crosswalk alignment will better streamline pedestrian safety and make interactions between vehicles and pedestrians safer for both parties.
This project will also add off-set bus loading zones at route stops so that pedestrians can safely access the public buses without disrupting the flow of traffic. Finally, this project will also be utilizing state of the art technology for emergency uses. In an emergency, EMS staff will be able to push a button to activate traffic signals to allow their emergency vehicles to pass without obstruction.
This project aligns with the City of Oxford’s Complete Streets Policy where we pledged to create streets that are designed for all users of the public right-of-way who can safely and conveniently reach their destinations along and across a street, regardless of their chosen mode of transportation, age, or physical condition. Miami University and the City of Oxford are working together to improve pedestrian safety.
