A Charter Review Commission is a temporary group of electors appointed by City Council to review the city’s charter. A charter is the basic document that defines the organization, powers, functions, and essential procedures of the city government. It serves as the city’s local constitution.
The role of the Charter Review Commission is to:
- Read, understand, and evaluate the current city charter.
- Identify sections that may be outdated, unclear, or need improvement.
- Discuss possible changes with staff input and legal guidance.
- Make recommendations to City Council.
If City Council supports any recommended changes, proposed amendments are placed on the ballot so Oxford voters can approve or reject them.
