Edna Carter Southard graduated with a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University. After majoring in English literature and writing, she worked for newspapers and magazines including The New York Times in Europe for three years. While a manuscript editor at the University of Chicago Press, she began graduate work in art history.
Dr. Southard is Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Emerita, Miami University Art Museum, and Assistant Professor of Art, Miami University. In addition to Miami University, she taught at Earlham College, Indiana University East, and Wright State University. She curated more than 300 exhibitions and wrote exhibition catalogues and gallery guides collaborating with scholars and artists. She has published books and articles on art history and museum studies, especially Italian Renaissance art, 19th century and contemporary art, and museums and the Holocaust. Since retiring from Miami, she continues to teach, research, write, publish, and guest curate.
Having lived in Oxford since 1993, and before that in Richmond and Liberty, Indiana, since 1971, she serves as vice president of the board of the Oxford Community Choice Pantry; secretary for four years and chair of nominating committee for four years of the League of Women Voters; and serves on the board, curriculum and special events committees of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Miami University. She taught five ILR courses, including one on walking tours of art in Oxford. Married to Bob Southard for 38 years until his death, she is the mother of two sons, David and Jared.
