US 27 South Improvements (BUT-27-14.12)

This project will improve US 27 South in the City of Oxford, Oxford Township, Butler county, in accordance with plans and specifications by pavement resurfacing, drainage improvements, new traffic signals, pavement widening, bridge removal and reconstruction, water works, and pavement markings.  Traffic will be maintained by use of temporary and existing pavement.  Utility relocation for this work is completed.  Construction completion is expected July 11, 2016.

Work to align US 27/Patterson Ave. with Chestnut St. will require the closing of Chestnut St. for approximately 30 days.  On Wednesday, August 26th, Chestnut St. will close to through traffic between Patterson Ave. and Maple St.  Northbound traffic will be detoured to turn left on Spring Street then left onto Campus Avenue to return to Chestnut Street.  The ODOT will display arrow boards and/or signs to alert motorists of the closure and detour.

The US 27 traffic pattern will change at the same time.  On the first day, northbound traffic will be switched over to the new pavement.  Southbound traffic will stay as is while concrete barriers are moved.  Southbound traffic will switch over later in the evening or the next day after the barrier placement is complete.  While the traffic lanes are split (one day), some restrictions will be in effect:  Traffic from McKee Ave. will only be able to turn right (northbound); traffic on Miami Western Drive will only be able to access US 27 from the traffic signal at University Park Blvd. and will be able to turn north or south; traffic exiting Spartan Drive will only be able to turn south; traffic exiting Talawanda High School will be able to turn north or south although the traffic lanes will be split.

Delays can be expected so allow a few extra minutes to your drive time.  To help ensure the safety of the construction workers and traveling public, please remain alert, reduce speed, and watch for stopped traffic while passing through the construction area.

Following are detour options to avoid the construction area:

Coming to Oxford from the Hamilton area:

Taking State Route 177 to State Route 73. Go left (west) on state Route 73 to U.S. 27/Patterson and the Miami University campus. Go right (north) on U.S. 27 to left on High Street to downtown Oxford.

Two options to come into Oxford from the south are:

1. Take U.S. 27 to Stillwell Beckett Road. Turn left (west) on Stillwell Beckett to Kehr Road. Turn right (north) on Kehr Rd. to Chestnut Street. Turn right (east) on Chestnut. Turn left at Main Street to arrive in uptown Oxford or continue and turn left (north) on Campus Avenue, Oak Street or Maple Street onto Miami University’s campus.

2. Take U.S. 27 to Stillwell Beckett Road. Turn left (west) on Stillwell Beckett to state Route 732. Turn right (north) on state Route 732 to Chestnut Street. Turn right (east) on Chestnut.  Turn left at Main Street to arrive in uptown Oxford or continue and turn left (north) on Campus Avenue, Oak Street or Maple Street onto Miami University’s campus.

Excessive rain events this spring and early summer have delayed the progress of this project but the contractor continues to work toward a July 2016 completion.
