2013 Historic Marker Ceremony Announcement
The City of Oxford Historic and Architectural Preservation Commission (HAPC) is pleased to announce the 2013 Annual Historic Marker Ceremony to be held on September 18, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. in the Oxford Community Arts Center. The HAPC will present two plaques this year. The marker program was started in 2009 and has been instrumental in helping citizens become aware of the rich historical heritage in Oxford. Since 2009, there have been 13 markers granted. This year’s featured speaker will be regional historian Steve Gordon. Steve will speak on the architectural legacy of Harry S. Thobe. Thobe was an avid Miami athletics fan as well as a well-known builder in the early 1900s.
Light refreshments will be served. Anyone is welcome to attend the event and find out who this year’s recipients are!
The marker program is completely a local recognition, but there are also state and national marker programs. To receive a marker, the applicant must compile a historical record of the property, complete with photographs, and be able to justify the property’s significance to the City of Oxford HAPC.
