The City of Oxford has two different types of positions – Civil Service Positions & Non-Civil Service Positions. There is one standard application form for all City positions.
Applications can be obtained over the web site, through mail requests or at the Municipal Building, 101 East High Street. You can also download the City Employment Application and Voluntary Recruitment forms and return either form to the above address, Attn: Human Resources.
The City accepts applications for both Civil Service and Non-Civil Service positions at all times and will keep applications on file for one year. Civil Service positions require a testing procedure and applicants are notified according to testing schedules.
The City advertises in the Oxford Press and Hamilton Journal for most vacant positions and will indicate whether the position is Civil Service. Those positions requiring special training or licenses are also advertised in other newspapers and trade publications.
When a vacancy occurs for a non-Civil Service position, an advertisement is submitted for publication. The advertisement will list a closing date for the submission of applications. Applications will be reviewed and those individuals who meet the requirements of the job description will be contacted for interviews. Following the interview process, a candidate will be selected and reference checks made. Upon completion of the reference checks, a recommendation will be made for an appointment.
Civil Service positions are basically the same with regard to advertising, however, testing dates will be noted in the ad or applicants will be notified by letter. Upon completion of the tests being graded, applicants will be notified by mail of their score and an eligibility list will be presented to the Civil Service Commission for approval. Once the list is approved, those individuals in the top five positions (top three for promotional positions) will be contacted for interviews and the process is then handled the same as with non-Civil Service positions. It is important to understand that Civil Service positions take a little longer to fill than non-Civil Service positions due to the requirements.
