The Community Development Department oversees the City's comprehensive planning, zoning, inspections and economic development in the following manner:
- Investigate fair housing for discrimination, grant work for rehabilitation, and the need for a varied housing stock, including assisted living and multi-family units. These initiatives are outlined in the City's Goals Statement.
- Grant building, rental, and demolition permits and certificates of code compliance
Community Development also includes preserving the historic districts and individual historic structures. Oxford has a Historic Architectural Preservation Commission (HAPC), and the Community Development Department helps its citizens apply for historical preservation grants when applicable. (See Historic Preservation under Zoning)
