Knowing Where and How to Park In Oxford Will Save You Money and Time

Parking in Oxford is very difficult and very frustrating. Yet, if you become frustrated and decide to park in a space or area that works for you, you could return to your vehicle to find a citation, or worse, your vehicle immobilized or impounded.

Be aware of where you would like to park -- are there signs designating certain time restrictions or denoting private property? Is the street a Residential Permitted Parking area for residents only? Are the curbs painted yellow or blue? If you paid for two hours of parking, are you certain you can return in time to move your vehicle?

Should you get a ticket, you will need to know that you may pay the parking violation either at the City Municipal Building or by inserting the fine into the envelope with the ticket and dropping it in one of the collection boxes found throughout the Business District.

Here are a list of Violations and the costs associated:
Parking Meter Fines:
Multi-meter and Expired Meter Fines escalate:

  • Within 48hrs: $10.00
  • After 48hrs through 15 days: $15.00
  • After 15 days: $25.00

Parked over time limit:
Within 5 days: $25.00
After 5 days: $50.00
This violation has been deemed a “Habitual Offender Violation” and the fines increase with each violation received in a twelve-month period. These fines must be paid within 5 days of receipt, otherwise they double:

  • First time offender: $25.00 fine (after 5 days, $50.00)
  • Second time offender: $50.00 fine (after 5 days, $75.00)
  • Third time offender: $75.00 fine (after 5 days, $100.00)

”BOOTING” Individuals who owe parking fines to the City of Oxford can be immobilized or “booted” until payment is made. Booting a vehicle costs $100.00 plus any outstanding parking fines. If the vehicle remains immobilized for more than 24 hours, an additional fee of $12.00 a day accrues for each day it is immobilized.

If the fines and fees are not paid in the first 24 hours, OPD reserves the right to impound the vehicle. Towing the vehicle to the Impound Lot is $100.00. The cost for the first 24 hours of impounding is $100.00. If the vehicle remains in the impound lot longer than 24 hours, a fee of $12.00 a day accrues for each day the car is held after the first 24 hours.

If a vehicle is immobilized and then towed, the owner is responsible for fees for both booting and towing as well as all outstanding parking citations.

Vehicles parked in violation of the 72 hour ordinance are also subject to either “booting” or towing. The citation for parking in violation of 72 hours is $50.00.

Parking Violations and Fine Cost for the first offense:
Prohibited Parking on Sidewalk or Lawn Area $25.00
Parked in Front or Within 3Ft of Driveway $25.00
